AHS Financial Aid Night Wednesday, Oct. 21, 7:00pm, AHS Little Theater. Seniors and Juniors and their parents are encouraged to come to this meeting. Learn everything you need to know to plan to pay for your student’s continued education after high school.

College Visits: College Admissions Officers Visit AHS Counseling Office

Students who want to learn more about private and public colleges from both far and near need only come to the Counseling Office Conference Room on the dates below to meet with an admissions officer and get a sense of what life might be like for them at a particular school. The visiting admissions rep is often the one who will be reading the applications from Albany High, so these college visits are an excellent opportunity to make a connection with a college a student is interested in. Parents are welcome to attend all college visits. Please check the daily bulletin for location and updates. Students will need to sign up in advance in the Counseling Office in order to attend, and must get permission from the teacher whose class they will miss.

Receptions: Another Way to Meet College Admissions Officers

Many private schools host receptions or meetings in the Bay Area, which students and parents can attend to learn more about the school. Often, more than one school will be present at a reception. College Preview Days/Open Houses

Many schools have Preview Days, when they open the campus for prospective students and parents to visit in order to learn more about life at the school, admissions, financial aid, honors programs, and many other aspects of the college. This is an opportunity for you to go to the school and see it for yourself. Some colleges offer scholarships or financial assistance for travel expenses. If you are interested in a college not listed here, please check with the admissions office or website for visitation procedures and events.

 

Bates College “Prologue to Bates” Fall Open House Programs for Multicultural Students – Oct. 11-13 or Nov. 8-10. Explore the opportunities that this small liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine has to offer. Scholarships available for travel expenses. Occidental College Fall Multicultural Visit Program – Oct. 25-27. Campus introduction for outstanding high school seniors of underrepresented backgrounds. The program is limited to 40 students; those selected will have the opportunity to travel to campus at no cost. Students must apply by Monday, Sept. 21. Kenyon College Trustee Opportunity Travel Grant - This program provides financial assistance to first-generation and other underrepresented students to make it easier for them to visit Kenyon and decide whether the College is a good match for them. Wendy’s High School Heisman Award - Male and female student athletes who are seniors this year and maintain a B average are eligible to apply for the Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizing excellence in academics, athletics and leadership. Horatio Alger Association - As one of the nation’s largest college financial aid programs in the country, the Horatio Alger National Scholars Program assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. The 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards - Let everyone know what you have been doing in your community! Ron Brown Scholar Program - The CAP Charitable Foundation funds scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American students who are currently seniors in high school and plan to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time. The HHCF (Hip Hop Chess Federation) Interstate Scholastic Chess Championship - Will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2009, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, CA. Galaxy Explorers Program - The Galaxy Explorers is a year-round program for high school students who represent the Chabot Space Science Center on-site and throughout the greater Oakland area. Galaxy Explorers perform live public science demonstrations, explain interactive exhibits, deliver mini science workshops, outreach to community centers and work in summer camps. The Galaxy Explorers’ program provides teens with work experience, community service/volunteer opportunities and paid internships. Participants engage in fun, hands-on scientific activities and develop real-world skills. Applicants must be between 14 and 17 years old, have an interest in science, math or technology, maintain a 2.0 GPA and participate at least 4 hours per month. Albany Police Activities League Youth Academy - The Albany Police Department is seeking motivated youth ages 14-17 to participate in an 8-week Youth Academy, which will give students a chance to see day-to-day operations of the police department, ride along with a police officer in the city of Albany, and inspire citizenship through a better understanding of the criminal justice system. The academy will include field trips and instruction in law enforcement issues, constitutional law, communications and more. The academy will consist of 8 weekly meetings (usually Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 11:30) and one mid-week evening session.
