Online Course Selection for 2009-2010

Student course selection takes place each Spring for the following year. Please check back then for access to the online course selection module.

Course Catalog

NOTE: The AHS Course Catalog will be offline until the middle of October. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Temporary course guides can be found here: Grade 9, Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12

The entire course catalog, which inlcudes all of the (potentially) offered courses at Albany High School is now available online here. We say potentially because, although the Board has approved these courses, AHS operates on a supply meets demand model, meaning that only courses with sufficient enrollment requests are offered.

Online Course Selection Instructions

Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Incoming Freshmen:

It’s very important that you read all of these instructions before beginning the online course selection process for next year.

When you are ready to begin the course selection process, return to the top of this page and find the section titled "Online Course Selection for 2009-2010."

Things to keep in mind before you begin:

  • Although the Counselors told some of you that you will not be able to save and return to work on your selection sheet, you now have the ability to save and return to change your selections. Once you press the “print” button, however, all of your choices are locked in and you will only be able to return and print additional copies, not make changes.
  • Your username and password are not your Schoolloop usernames and passwords. They follow a similar convention to the AHS library computers (GraduationyearLastnameFirstname-- For example, an incoming Freshman named John Doe would have the username 13doejohn). Your password is your Student ID#.
  • If you have trouble logging in, please check the list located here to make sure you’re typing in the correct username.
  • The “back” button will not work on your browser during the selection process. To start over, refresh or reload the page.
  • For technical support with online course selection, email jcastle@albany.k12.ca.us. The email subject line must read “Online Course Selection Help” or it will not be answered.

Instructions:

  1. Log in.

  2. Fill out name and information.

  3. To see all available courses, click on the blue subject-area tabs.

  4. To select a course, click the “add class” button.

  5. To remove a selected course, click the red “x”.

  6. Make sure you read all of the pop-up boxes. They contain important information.

  7. When you are ready to lock in your selections, press the “print” button at the end of the process.

  8. Bring the printed confirmation form with you to Advisement Day on March 30-31 (current Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors only).

Choosing a Science Class (9th)

As an incoming 9th grader, you may now choose one of the following science classes: Earth-Space Science, Biology or Chemistry. Below is some information to help you make your choice. Please note: although a science class is not required in 9th grade, it is our strong recommendation that 9th graders take a science class. If a 9th grader does not take science, and does not take foreign language, he/she will have only two core academic classes (English and Math).

Requirements

In choosing a science class, keep in mind two kinds of requirements: high school graduation requirements and college admissions requirements. For high school graduation, two years of science are required: one year of a life science and one year of a physical science. For admission to most four-year colleges, a minimum of two years of a college approved lab science is required. In most cases, students need one year of a lab science in the life sciences and one year in the physical sciences to be college eligible.

Earth-Space Science is open to all 9th graders. The class focuses on geology and space science. This class meets the Albany High School graduation requirement for a physical science. It also meets the California State University (CSU) requirement for a lab science in the physical sciences. It does NOT meet the lab science requirement for the University of California (UC) system. For the UC system, Earth-Space Science is considered a “college prep elective.”

Biology is open to all 9th graders. This is an introductory course in biology. This class meets the Albany High School graduation requirement for a life science. It also meets the lab science requirement in life science for both the CSU system and the UC system.

Chemistry is open to 9th graders who have taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade and earned a “B” or above. The class is recommended only for those students with a very strong background in Algebra, as success in the class is dependent on Algebra skills. Chemistry meets the Albany High School graduation requirement in physical science, and also meets the lab science requirement for a physical science for both the CSU and UC systems.

Additional Information

If you want more information to help with your science selection, please view the “AHS Course Catalog” that you will find on this website. The course catalog contains more detailed descriptions of the above courses.
